Is it legal to shoot a pellet gun in your own backyard in the suburbs of Syracuse, NY. if it is done safely?

I live in the heart of suburban Syracuse. There is an open field & a few acres of trees directly behind my house, & in the direction I shoot. I'm only shooting pellet & bb guns at soda cans & boxes with targets on them. I realize this can be as loud as somebody chopping wood or even a hammer pounding nails in thanks to the loudness of my pellet guns. So far the neighboors haven't called the cops & the police station is only about a half mile away, visible across the creek in the winter time. Anyhow I want to know if there are any resources out there that talk about firing pellet guns on your own property. Is this legal? What will happen if somebody does call the cops, or if the police come to investigate because of the noise? How should i respond if they do show up at my door? I've been doing this for years & I just wondered if anybody had any REAL facts about this particular situation. I believe in the 2nd Ammendment, & I also know these aren't firearms. I just want to keep it legal.
